How to Choose a Violin
This is a rather tricky question and one which has very many answers. The perfect violin for you depends very much on your circumstances and also your goals for your violin playing.
Choosing a Violin for a Beginner
Choosing a violin for a complete beginner is especially difficult as more often than not, the student has no prior knowledge of instruments or the appropriate budget. It is very tempting to get the cheapest violin you can find "Just incase you don't take to it", which is understandable, to a certain extent. However buying the cheapest possible violin may not be the best idea for a beginner as low quality cheap instruments are incredibly hard to play much more so than slightly more expensive instruments.
This raises the question: "How Much Should I Spend"
In an ideal world everybody would start off with a brand new violin made by a local luthier (violin maker) for around £3,500, however this is rather un-realistic and so I would suggest a branded factory made violin for £100-£150. Names to look out for include Stentor, Primavera and Antoni.
These are available from many different places, but we can personally recommend Anthony Nickolds Violins, he made both my violin and viola and they are wonderful instruments.

Choosing a Violin for and Intermediate Player
This is a far easier question to answer, I would suggest an antique (or at least aged) instrument of around £500-£600. These are readily available from most violin shops, I would however suggest that you take your violin tutor with you to help pick the best instrument for you.
Choosing a Violin for An Advanced Player
For this I would suggest searching nationwide on luthiers websites as the best value for money can often be found in modern instruments, which can often be custom made especially for you. It is still probably still worth taking your violin tutor with you as an additional opinion is always of help. There is no doubt, at this point, that you probably know what you want from your instrument.
These instruments are usually available fro £4000+.
